Mexico City, Mexico — More than 98 million eligible voters will flood the streets throughout Mexico to elect the next President. The 2024 election marks a milestone for Mexico’s democracy, with 20,000 offices up for election, including governorships, city hall seats, the entire Congress and the president.
As of 8:00 a.m. local time, the National Electoral Institute, Mexico’s electoral body, has been in charge of running 100,402 polling places out of a planned total of 170,182, which means an operability of more than 58%.
According to the latest polls, the presidential candidate for the ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, leads among the preferences of Mexicans with more than 50% support while her opposer, candidate Xochitl Galvez, has slipped to second place with over 30% of support according to national polls.
As is customary, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was amongst the first to cast a vote. Outside the Art Museum of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), in front of the National Palace, the Mexican President exclaimed, “Animo!” after casting his vote.
Mexican presidential candidates were also reported to have cast their votes in the early morning hours.
