Mexican Carlos Vela In The Running To Captain MLS All-Stars

Having signed with Los Angeles FC in August last year, 28-year-old Carlos Vela already had made headlines by being the first ever player to move from Mexican national team, La Liga club Real Sociedad, to the LA team. So far he has scored seven goals for the American team and five assists within his first season.

Now the MLS All-Stars are set to play on August 1 and Mexican Carlos Vela has been shortlisted to be team captain for the famous game against the Italian team, Juventus.

The Major League Soccer all-star game is an annual match where the selection of the best MLS players are brought in from all the teams to compete against a rival club. The team, which will compete against an international opposition is selected through a series of fan voting and manager appointments. Started in 1996, the MLS All-Stars hold nine wins, however currently Real Madrid remains champion after last year’s win.

Vela was born in Cancun, Mexico and started his soccer career at Guadalajara club before going onto join Arsenal. He has since played for several Spanish football teams as well as becoming a key player for Mexico’s national team since 2007. As well as being a world-class player, Vela has participated in two World Cups (including Russia 2018) and played 63 games for his home country. He was also awarded Player of the Year by Real Sociedad for two years before making the move to LA.

According to the MLS roster for this year, 2018 will boast the most diverse group in the team’s twenty-two-year history. As well as ten of the players having FIFA World Cup histories, players have been selected from 16 countries from around the world. This sets a new record for the MLS-All Stars, where the previous record was set at a mixture of 13 nationalities in 2016 and 2017.

Vela is yet to secure the spot of captain, however, and has been pitted to be in the running against a number of prominent soccer players for the prestigious spot. Bradley Wright-Phillips (NY Red Bulls), Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers) and Michael Parkhurst (Atlanta United) are also shortlisted to captain the game, set to take place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, states the MLS official site.

The MLS All-Stars have not won the competition since 2015 after losing to Arsenal in 2016 and Real Madrid last year. The pressure will be on for Coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino (Atlanta United) and especially the selected captain to keep the team on top form for what they will hope will finally be a win.
